IL4ZARD ASSESSMENT
This hazard assessment is based on available information concerning chemical hazards known or suspected to
be present at the Frontier Transportation, Inc. property. The potential risks to site workers are evaluated below.
1 . No danger exists from flammability no explosion since petroleum concentrations have been identified at less
than 1 % of the lower explosive limit of the most volatile constituent of the compound.
2. No significant risk of inhalation of petroleum vapors exist due to the extremely low levels identified and the
depth at which the concentrations were observed.
r_ J 5.1 CHEMICAL EXPOSURE
r Site workers may be exposed to the components of gasoline during field activities, including drilling, sampling
and treatment operations. Potential exposure is to petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and water_ At present, the
major expected site contaminants are benzene, toluene and xylene. A description of these chemicals can be found in
Table 1. The routes of exposure for fuel hydrocarbons are ingestion, inhalation, skin absorption and eye or skin contact.
Measures shall be taken to eliminate personnel exposure through the use of personal protection equipment when
engineering controls are not feasible.
5.2 FIRE AND EXPLOSION
The risk of fire or explosion during site activities is present, though minimal. Toluene is considered flammable
and is a known contaminant on-site. The lower explosive hunts (LEL) for benzene, toluene and xylene are 13 to 1 .4
I` J
Il1
! I
