7hN3dwe11&Rd10
• 1.2.1.3 Area 20
Description
This site is referred to as the former Western Pacific Rail Road site. The site, currently a vacant
dirt lot(Figure 6),is north of West Lindsay Street, between North Harrison and North Madison
Streets.
Site History
This site was originally used as a switching yard for the Western Pacific Rail Road.
Previous Investigations
In 1992, RESNA conducted a soil and groundwater investigation at the site for the SDHR. The
• investigation included drilling 30 shallow soil borings to collect soil samples at 5 feet bgs,
followed by compositing the samples into six 5:1 samples for laboratory analyses. Three of the
borings were extended to 38 feet bgs and completed as monitoring wells (RESNA, 1992). The
investigation results indicated that no volatile or semi-volatile compounds, including petroleum
hydrocarbons, were detected in soil or groundwater, and Title 22 metals detected in soil and
groundwater did not exceed Total Threshold Limit Concentrations. RESNA recommended that
no additional work be performed. The RESNA report is included in Appendix C.
Additional soil and groundwater sampling was conducted by Treadwell & Rollo in September
1999. This work was reported in the 3 December 1999 Site Characterization Report. Also,
monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-3 were sampled and Figure 6 shows their locations.
Analytical results are given in Tables 1 through 7.
On 15 September 1999, a backhoe was used to dig six exploratory pits. Test pits 20TP-1 through
20TP-6 were excavated to 6 feet bgs at the locations shown on Figure 6. Twelve soil samples
9
25970309.DGD 24 August 2000
