Treadwell&Rollo
•
2.2.2 Area 16
This site is located west of Area 15 and is referred to as the 424 North Van Buren Street site and
the Chase Chevrolet site. Currently the site is used for automobile salvage or repair, and as an
automobile towing yard. Areas between buildings are paved with asphalt or concrete slabs
(Figure 6).
This site was originally developed in the early 1900s and re-developed sometime after the mid-
1960s for use by an auto dealership. A 1,000 gallon UST which reportedly stored gasoline and
diesel was removed in 1986 and petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was documented during
the removal (AGE, 1996). There are no USTs currently at the site. Remediation activities are
ongoing under the oversight of the SJCEHD.
2.2.3 Area 21
• This area is referred to as the Crystal Creamery site at 404 West Fremont Street. The eastern
half of the site is currently being used as a dairy distribution center and is paved and covered
with buildings. The western half of the site is vacant and unpaved (Figure 7).
The site has been used as a dairy distribution facility since prior to 1965. The site is currently
under the oversight of the SJCEHD. A 10,000 gallon capacity UST used for gasoline was
removed on 3 September 1986 and found to have leaked. There are no USTs currently at the
site.
3.0 IDENTIFICATION OF REMEDIAL OBJECTIVES
Remedial alternatives have been separately evaluated for each operable unit. The rationale for
this action lies in the anticipated end-uses of the properties and the type and extent of soil and/or
groundwater contamination found at the operable units.
•
16
25970318.PGS 15 November 2000
