San Joaquin County Page 4 Phase II Assessment Work Plan
Public Health Services Tracy, California
Environmental Health Division 30 April 1999
• Total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons by EPA Method 418.1 (one sample per direct
push boring for a total of three total soil samples assumed).
• Persistent organochlorine pesticides and chlorinated herbicides, by EPA Methods 8081 and
8150/8151 (three total composite soil samples assumed).
Groundwater Sampling and Analysis
Groundwater will be sampled in the three direct push borings, after advancing the borings to their
total depth (less than 15 feet bgs if sufficient water to sample is encountered shallower). The
groundwater samples will be collected by placing a temporary well screen and casing into the
boring after withdrawing the soil probe, and using a narrow diameter bailer to retrieve a grab
sample. The samples will be obtained using new disposable polyethylene bailers and new string
for each location. The water will be carefully decanted into preserved containers appropriate to
the analyses. The sample bottles will be labeled as to well identification and the date and time of
sampling, and will be immediately placed into a chilled cooler on ice. The samples will be
shipped or delivered to a California-certified analytical laboratory accompanied by proper chain-
of-custody documentation.
The groundwater samples will be analyzed for the following parameters:
• Total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons by EPA Method 418.1 (three total samples
assumed).
• Persistent organochlorine pesticides and chlorinated herbicides, by EPA Methods 8081 and
8150/8151 (three total composite soil samples assumed).
Sampling equipment, including trowels, shovels, hand auger, and sampling tubes used will be
decontaminated by washing in a potable water and low phosphate detergent solution, then rinsed
with potable water and deionized water. The proposed direct push borings will be abandoned by
filling to ground surface with a bentonite/neat cement grout, placed through a tremie pipe. The
direct push boring method to be used is anticipated to generate negligible amounts of waste, and
the possible contaminants of concern are not anticipated to render the material a regulated
hazardous waste. Therefore, the soil sample remnants and sampling equipment rinsate will be
discharged to the ground at the boring locations.
SCA: s:\whc\wp\sharedl\projects\homedepo\tracy\p2wkplan.doc
