In addition, WESTON proposes to collect three composite surface soil samples for
chlorinated pesticide and chlorinated herbicide analysis.
Prior to beginning site work, WESTON will prepare a site specific Health and Safety Plan
(HASP) in accordance with the requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations Title 29, Section
1910.120 (29 CFR 1910.120). The HASP will address mitigating the risk of exposure to possible
contaminants, potential physical hazards, and means to respond to contingencies, including
identifying the nearest emergency medical services provider. Prior to beginning the field
investigation, Underground Services Alert (USA) will be notified.
Subsurface Soil Sampling and Analysis
In order to evaluate potential impacts within the subsurface vadose zone, WESTON will
subcontract with a firm to advance and sample four direct push soil bogs to a maximum depth
of approximately 15 feet below ground surface (bgs) each, in locations distributed across the
subject property (Figure 3). Two of the borings will be located directly north of the Chevron
pipeline.
Soil samples will be collected from the borings either continuously (macrocore), or at depths of
one foot, five feet, 10 feet, and 15 feet bgs and retained for possible laboratory analysis. Soil
samples will be collected by advancing the sampling tube through undisturbed soils at the target
depth intervals, retaining the soil within stainless steel or acrylic sleeves contained in the
sampling tube. The soil from each sampled interval will be logged for lithology and appearance,
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. The samples will be labeled as to
sample identification and date and time of collection. Samples will be stored in a chilled cooler on
ice. The samples will be delivered to a California-certified analytical laboratory accompanied by
proper chain-of-custody documentation. Analysis of soil samples will be selectively performed
for those samples exhibiting unusual appearance or odor, favoring those from the shallow to
intermediate depth ranges noted above. One soil sample from each boring will be analyzed, with
others archived for possible subsequent analysis.
The selected subsurface soil samples will be analyzed for the following:
• Petroleum hydrocarbons in the diesel and motor oil carbon chain ranges by USEPA Method
8015 modified (Cal-DHS).
SCA: s:\whc\wp\sharedl\projects\homedepo\tracy\p2wkplan.doc
