SECOR
Ms. Devra Lewis
August 12, 2004
Page 2
ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES
FIELD ACTIVITIES
On June 21, 2004, SECOR supervised Cascade Drilling Incorporated (Cascade) of Rancho
Cordova, California, as they advanced three soil borings, SB-1, SB-2, and SB-3 at the
locations shown on Figure 2. The soil borings were advanced to approximately 9-1/2 to 10
feet bgs. Each boring location was hand-cleared using an air-knife tool and a hand auger
to a total depth of approximately 6 feet bgs. Groundwater and select soil samples were
collected from each boring and submitted to Lancaster Laboratories Incorporated
(Lancaster) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania for chemical analysis. In addition, samples were
also submitted to ChevronTexaco Energy Technology Company (ETC).
ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES
Lancaster analyzed soil and groundwater samples for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) by CA LUFT;
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd), total petroleum hydrocarbons as jet
fuel (TPHj), and total petroleum hydrocarbons as motor oil (TPHm) by modified EPA
Method 8015B, and,
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX), and methyl tertiary butyl
ether(MtBE) by EPA Method 8260B.
The soil and groundwater samples were also analyzed by ETC for gasoline, diesel, and jet
fuel range petroleum hydrocarbons.
RESULTS
Subsurface Conditions
Field observations and boring logs indicate that the top 3 feet of soil consisted primarily of
sand with fines. From approximately 3 to 7 feet bgs clayey-sand was encountered.
Beyond 7 feet bgs, sandy clay was predominant. The color of clays logged within 1 to 7 ft
bgs were generally very dark brown, brown, dark gray, or dark brown. During boring
activities groundwater was typically encountered around 6-1/2 to 7-1/2 ft bgs. Boring logs
are included in Attachment 2.
is\Chevron\32792\Reports\Chevron Pipeline Assessment Report RevA.doc
