Y
18 August 2000
AGE-NC Project No . 00 - 0753
Page 2 of 5
The preliminary site assessment tasks are discussed below.
3 . 1 . PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
A health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health Administration, U. S . Coast Guard and U. S . Environmental Protection Agency, 1985) .
Prior to mobilization, the area of excavation will be clearly marked and an utility clearance obtained
through Underground Service Alert,
3 . 2 . SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Initially, AGE proposes to advance five soil probe borings using direct push technology (DPT) to
determine if petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil and/or ground water is present beneath the site.
Proposed probe boring locations are -illustrated in Figure 2 .
The proposed probe boring locations may be modified due to field observations or additional borings
may be advanced with approval by the PHS -EHD . Each proposed probe borings will be advanced
to 30 feet bsg or until the field observations and field screening using an organic vapor monitor
(OVM) indicate that detectable petroleum vapors are not present in the soil samples screened from
two consecutive five-foot intervals .
Soil samples will be collected at 5400t intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg extending to the total probe
boring depths .
Field procedures for advancement of probe borings and collection of soil samples are presented in
Sections 4 . 1 and 4 .2 . Selected soil samples from each probe boring will be submitted for laboratory
analysis with concurrence of the PHS -EHD . The selected soil samples will be analyzed by a State
of California Department of Health Services (DHS) -certified laboratory for the following
constituents :
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g) , and total petroleum hydrocarbons as
diesel (TPH-d) by EPA Method 8015odified/3550 ;
• Volatile aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene and total xylene : BTEX) , and
methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by Method 8020 and;
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
