pending delivery (under Chain-of-Custody) to a laboratory for chemical testing. The Chain-of-
Custody Records for the investigation are attached as Appendix G
After the representative sample was packaged, a photoionization detector (PID) was used to
monitor the samples remaining in the sampler for volatile organic compound (VOC) vapors. The
soil was then classified in accordance with the unified soil classification system (USCS) by visual
methods. A summary of VOC readings and USCS classifications is presented in the boring logs
attached as Appendix A.
6.3 GROUNDWATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Groundwater sampling of monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-4 was performed by SECOR
personnel on May 15, 1997. Prior to sampling, the wells were purged by hand using a 1.5 inch
diameter by 3-foot long stainless steel bailer until approximately 10 to 15 gallons of water had
been removed from each of the wells. For quality control purposes, the stainless steel bailer was
decontaminated between each well purged using an Alconox detergent solution, followed by double
rinsing using distilled water. Groundwater extracted from the wells was stored in labeled 55-gallon
drums on the property pending receipt of analytical results and awaiting appropriate disposal and
manifesting.
After purging, groundwater was sampled from within each of the wells, at the air-water interface,
utilizing single-sample polypropylene disposable bailers. Groundwater was transferred directly
from the base of the bailers utilizing a bottom emptying device to minimize volatilization.
Collected water samples were placed directly into 40-milliliter (ml) glass vials and 1-liter glass
bottles provided by the laboratory and sealed with Teflon-lined septum, screw-on lids after
expelling any trapped air. Labels containing sample number, well identification, date and time
collected, type of sample and type of preservative were then affixed to each sample container. The
sample containers were then packed in ice and placed into a cooler for delivery under Chain-of-
Custody for chemical testing. The Chain-of-Custody Records for the investigation are attached as
Appendix C.
6.4 GROUNDWATER SURVEY
In order to establish groundwater elevations in the monitoring wells installed during this
investigation, a survey was performed by SECOR personnel on May 22, 1997. Vertical elevations
of the well locations were determined from a temporary bench mark, assigned at the top of casing
elevation for monitoring well MW-2. The elevation used for the top of casing for MW-2 (23.00
feet)was interpolated from a U.S. Geological Survey topographic map for the area.
JN 40007-08MI
IhgVmw\97-06 wiWcouac.doc
6-2
