At each monitoring well, the well cover was removed and the elevation at the top of the well casing
was determined to 0.01 foot. A black mark was made on top of the well casing io indicate the
precise elevation point. After elevations were obtained for the casing tops, a Solinst electronic
water sensing device, accurate to 0.01 foot, was lowered into the well casing to measure the
distance from the casing tops to the groundwater surface. The Solinst readings were then
subtracted from the elevations at the casing top to obtain a groundwater elevation.
Based on reports from investigations in the immediate vicinity of the site, groundwater flow
direction is anticipated to be to the north northeast. The groundwater survey data is not presented
herein because the measured groundwater elevations exhibited unexplained variations that could be
the result of:
1) Perched groundwater conditions
2) Slow recharge or unstable groundwater levels in the wells
3) Seasonal variation
4) Irrigation of adjacent sites
The groundwater elevations will be surveyed again in the near future and the results will be
submitted as an addendum to this report. A summary of the groundwater data is included herein as
Table 1.
6.5 BORING ABANDONMENT PROCEDURES "
Following sampling, the borings (SB-1 through SB-3) were abandoned by pouring medium-size
bentonite chips through the augers to the bottom of the bore holes. As the bentonite level rose, the
augers were raised slowly and removed from the boring one section at a time. The bentonite
elevation was monitored regularly by the drilling crew with a weighted tape that was lowered from
the ground surface to the top of the bentonite to ensure the level of the bentonite was always above
the elevation of the cutting head. The level of bentonite was raised to an elevation of about 1 foot
bgs, at which time the bentonite was hydrated with tap water. Bentonite was then added and
hydrated flush with the existing surface grade.
JN 40007-088-01
11i& X97-06jw\arc uac.dm
6-3
