A
minimum of three samples shall be collected from the site. Each sample shall be a composite of the
vertical depth of the material.
THREE SPECIES EFFLUENT TOXICITY MONITORING
Effluent toxicity monitoring shall be conducted to determine whether the effluent is contributing
toxicity to the San Joaquin River. The testing shall be conducted as specified in US EPA guidance
manual EPA 600/4-89/001. Effluent toxicity samples shall be collected from the sedimentation basin
discharge prior to its entering the San Joaquin River. Grab samples shall be representative of the
volume and quality of the discharge. Time of collection of samples shall be recorded. Effluent
toxicity monitoring shall include the following:
Species: Pimephales promelas, Ceriodaphnia, and Selenastrum
Frequency: Once for each project within 7 days after the start of discharge.
Dilution Series: Initial testing shall be on 100% effluent. If toxicity is found, then
retesting must immediately be done using the following dilution series.
Controls
Dilutions (%) River Lab
100 50 25 12.5 6.25 Water Water
• Effluent 100 50 25 12.5 6.25 0 0
• Dilution Water* 0 50 75 87.5 93.75 100 0
% Lab Water 0 0 0 0 0 0 100
* Dilution Water shall be non-toxic receiving water from the San Joaquin River taken
upcurrent from the discharge point.
