for railroad cars. No other specific information is readily available on the property at this time;
however, the subject property is located northwest of the City's Banner Island site, which will
be investigated concurrently. Banner Island was a delta island that was reclaimed in the twenties
and was occupied by a ship building facility from at least the thirties until the site was cleared
in the seventies. It is unknown what materials were utilized for reclamation. It has been
reported however, that solid waste was used as part of the fill (Jim Escobar, City of Stockton,
verbal communication, 1989). The former WPRR site is also located adjacent to two known
hydrocarbon contaminated sites, Crystal Creamery and Chase Chevrolet.
3.0 SITE GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY
The site is situated on level terrain comprised of Quaternary-Recent alluvial sediments and fill
materials. The site is primarily underlain by silt and clay with zones of silty sand. The fill
materials have reportedly included municipal solid waste as well as dredged material from the
channel. Depth to water is estimated to be approximately 21 feet below grade. The estimated
groundwater flow direction is easterly, based on the flow direction of nearby sites (San Joaquin
County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, 1990).
4.0 OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF PROPOSED WORK
Based on the information available and the presence of nearby hydrocarbon contamination, the
objectives of this preliminary investigation are to:
• Define the areal extent of soil and groundwater impaction;
• Locate potential source(s) of the impaction;
• Determine the shallow groundwater flow direction and hydraulic gradient
beneath the site;
• Develop remedial alternatives, if necessary.
WP013192.SAY
