2.6.1 Skin Contact. Skin contact of hazardous substances is a potential route
of exposure due to the presence of hazardous substances in an uncontrolled setting.
Unauthorized persons may trespass onto the site and be exposed through direct
contact to wastes accumulated and/or discharged to the soil.
2.6.2 Inhalation. Inhalation of hazardous substances is a potential route of
exposure due to the fact that the hazardous substances are in an uncontrolled setting.
Exposure is also possible as a result of fugitive dust generation in areas of potential soil
contamination. Unauthorized persons may trespass onto the site and generate dusts.
Typical activities that might generate dust and expose both the trespasser and off-site
residents or vehicle occupants include building demolition, walking on the Site, driving
of vehicles on the Site, or demolition of buildings.
2.6.3 Ingestion. Ingestion of hazardous substances is a potential route of
exposure. Trespassers may handle the hazardous substances, which may result in
ingestion of hazardous substances that are deposited on dinnerware, hands. Young
children also tend to ingest more soil than adults due to the nature of their recreation
and hygiene practices.
2.7 Public Health and/or Environmental Risk. Hazardous substances have
been stored and handled at this Site. The uncontrolled storage and improper labeling of
these containers poses a high level threat of the release or improper transport and
disposal of hazardous substances. Unauthorized persons may trespass onto the site
and be exposed through direct contact to hazardous substances accumulated and/or
discharged to the soil. Trespassers may not practice proper hygiene and may ingest
hazardous substances that are deposited on their hands. Trespassers may spill
solutions from their containers, creating a release and those solutions may be absorbed
through the skin. The duration of the exposure is unknown as depending on the specific
trespasser.
