12 September 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0324
Probe borings were sampled at five foot intervals beginning at twenty feet bsg, using a Geoprobe
soil sampling device loaded with four six-inch by 1.125 inch brass sleeves. The second sleeve,
collected was covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. All samples were labeled.
Collected samples preserved for laboratory analysis were placed in a chilled container, under ice,
and transported to McCampbell Analytical, Inc., (MAI) under chain-of-custody. The sampling
equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed with water prior to each sampling run to
avoid cross-contamination.
32. SOIL LOGGING
After sample preservation soil was extruded from the remaining portions of the sleeve and screened
utilizing an organic vapor meter equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene), and the readings were recorded on the
Boring Logs.
3.3. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
Grab ground water samples were collected from all probe borings using a temporary PVC screen.
The probe rods were advanced to a depth of twenty five feet pulled out and a screened casing was
inserted into the saturated zone. Ground water was allowed to enter the casing, and samples were
retrieved using a modified PVC tubing bailer.
After sample retrieval, the water sampler was disassembled and cleaned. New PVC tubing was used
to collect each sample. Water samples were collected into 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials
containing 0.5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid for sample preservation. The samples were placed in a
chilled container under ice and transported under cliain-of-custody to MAI for analysis.
3.4. LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND GROUND WATER SAMPLES
Selected soil and ground water samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Method 5030/8015-
M for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline(TPH-g),in accordance with EPA Method
8020 for volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes: BTE&X) and for methyl
tertiary butyl ether (MTBE).
Advanced GeoEnviron mental Inc.
