Manual Aerosol Can Puncturing Device Procedure
• Secure puncturing device to the top of a rust -free 30/55 gallon, closed -top drum to collect the liquids.
• Ensure that safety glasses are being worn prior to puncturing.
• Facility Staff shall use extreme caution while loading aerosol cans into puncturing device.
• Slowly pull down the handle on the puncturing device.
• Allow a few seconds of contact time before releasing the handle to raise the puncturing pin.
• Completely empty can(s) by allowing contents to drain into the containment drum.
• Remove punctured can from puncture unit and allow to air dry prior to disposal/recycling.
• It is recommended that cans that contain solvents, degreaser and lubricants are punctured last to help
with keeping the puncturing unit clean.
1.5. Clean -Up & Maintenance of Aerosol Can Puncturing Device
Proper operation and maintenance of puncturing equipment is required for its safe use. Maintain a strict clean-up
schedule to keep the aerosol can puncturing device in good working order, including:
Use a putty knife to clean accumulated materials from the puncturing platform, walls and container
funnel.
Ensure proper cleaning of the puncturing unit to prevent moving parts from "freezing" in place making
it difficult to remove parts and replace gaskets. See owner's manual for all scheduled maintenance,
repair and adjustments.
1.6. Managing Punctured, Drained, Empty Aesosc! Cans
Empty, steel aerosol can are recyclable and accepted by the steel industry; verify with local recycling program for
specifics. Prior to recycling cans, completely empty and remove plastic lid; spray nozzles need not be removed.
Residue remaining in an aerosol can may be subject to federal and state regulations so complete product
drainage is strongly recommended.
1.7. Managing 30/55 Gallon Container of Residual Liquid
Once the drum is either full or reaches the allotted accumulation period it must be disposed of using a state
registered Hazardous Waste disposal company (Asbury Environmental Services).
Consult the Safety Department with any questions, comments or concerns regarding Aerosol Can Management.
AEROSOL CAN MANAGEMENT
