Louise Avenue
Lathrop, CA I
San Joaquin County Public,Health Services, Environmental Health Division i
(PHS/EHD) has reviewed thIe "Eastern Soil Contamination Boundary and
Confirmation Work Plan" dated January 28, 1998, prepared by W.H.F. Inc_ for
the above referenced site. 1
As previously directed by PHSIEHD, the source of the continued groundwater
contamination must be investigated. This will be accomplished by determining
the vertical and lateral extent of petroleum contamination that exists in the soil
and groundwater as a result of the operation of former underground storage
tanks (UST's) at this site.
Soil samples were collected, at a depth of 12 feet below ground surface (bgs),
beneath the UST's at the time of removal. PHS/EHD staff notations of observed
contamination were confirmed with the results of the soil sample analysis. All the
soil samples collected and analyzed from the borings in 1992 at a depth of 12.5
feet bgs evidenced contamination. In addition, soil samples collected and
analyzed from 10 feet bgs, when monitoring wells 1,2, and 3 were installed,
evidenced contamination.
The vertical extent of the contamination in the soil must be defined. All borings
9
proposed for this investigation must be advanced to a depth where volatile
organic screening tools and field observations indicate that no further
contamination exists. This will obviously require sampling deeper than the
proposed 12.5 feet and 15 feet bgs proposed in the work plan. Sample
collection every five feet or change in lithology is reguired to total depth. A
minimum of one soil sample from each boring will undergo analysis for the
contaminants discussed in the work plan. PHSIEHD may require additional
samples be analyzed. All borings are to be logged and reported. Hand angered
borings may not be capable,of retrieving soil samples to the depths necessary to
complete this investigation. :
Al
y
I
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
:. si
