Drilling and well permits were obtained and
the initial phase of work was conducted on November 22, 1994. The first phase of work
involved the installation of an off-site groundwater monitoring well in the down gradient
direction on Bizzebe Street. This well was installed through the sidewalk after obtaining
an encroachment permit from the City of Lathrop. In addition, two soil borings were
drilled in the mobile home park to further define the lateral extent of contamination west
of the former underground tank location. Water samples were obtained from the borings
using a hydropunch type apparatus. The laboratory results from these borings will be used
to better locate the additional monitoring wells required for complete plume
characterization.
We are currently waiting for the laboratory results from the two soil borings before
scheduling the balance of the proposed work. However, one of the soil borings disclosed
considerable (apparent) petroleum contamination and'we would expect a high laboratory
response. This boring was located east of the small storm water retention pond and about
one hundred feet west of the former tank location. It appears that a considerable amount
of petroleum had leaked from the fuel tanks formerly located on the property. This baring
was drilled in a location that would normally be up gradient from the former tanks and
would require a large quantity of fuel to produce the necessary head to carry it. Since the
tanks were relatively small, 550 and 1000 gallons, the product loss probably occurred over
a period of time and fuel inventory was probably not monitored.
We hope to complete the definition of the soil and groundwater on the mobile home
property with the remaining proposed work. Additional off-site assessment may be
required to the south and possibly to the east.
