Mr. Frank Ryan. Page 2
Review of the tank removal soil sampling analyses indicates the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons beneath the l
UST. The soil samples were obtained from a depth of 12 feet. Monitoring Well 3 was drilled in the former UST
excavation. Analysis of the soil sample which was obtained from a depth of 10-11.5 feet indicates the presence of
petroleum hydrocarbons. Based on the concentration of remaining petroleum hydrocarbons and the depth to
groundwater at this site remediation'of the former UST excavation is required under Title 23 as interpreted in the
LUFT manual and the Tri-Regional Guidelines.
The abandoned drinking water well is located between MW-5 and MW-b. The concentration of Diesel in the area
of the abandoned drinking water well may be between 400 and 800 ppb. The well must be destroyed in a manner
which will prevent hydrocarbon contamination of the deeper confined aquifers.
PHS/EHD requires a remedial action workplan to address the groundwater plume and the soil contamination in the
former UST excavation by April 15, 1995.
A workplan for destruction of the abandoned drinking water well may be delayed until after the historical well
installation document search is completed.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
3
Steven Sasson, Senior REHS Diane M.
