(Aegis).
On behalf of Shell, Aegis wishes to submit the following comments in regard to the
installation of an additional monitoring well at the subject site.
Shell has and continues to abide by the agreement established in the November 1991
meeting, to monitor groundwater beneath the site. Petroleum hydrocarbons have not
been detected in groundwater beneath the site for over seven quarters. As agreed upon
in the November 1991 meeting, continued groundwater monitoring was to be in lieu of
further investigation/remediation at the site.
Specifically, your letter expressed concerns that the horizontal and vertical extent of
contamination of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil associated with the northern dispenser
have not been established. A single soil sample (T-3) collected from beneath the
dispenser island contained 1,510 parts-per-million total petroleum hydrocarbons, as
gasoline. A review of Section 4.1, "Extent of Petroleum Hydrocarbons Constituents in
Soils; Problem Assessment Report," (Delta Environmental, Inc.; October 1990) indicates
that soil boring S-1 was advanced on October 10, 1989, to evaluate the vertical extent of
petroleum hydrocarbons at the location of the' northern dispenser. The location of soil
boring S-1 was approximately 10 feet south of the location of soil sample T-3. Results of
that investigation indicted that petroleum hydrocarbons were not present at depths of
11-1/2 and 44-1/2 feet below surface.
91-231C.LTR
GEOLOGISTS ENGINEERS • GROUNDWATER SCIENTISTS
