26 August 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1025
Page 2 of 3
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
On 19 August 2003, an AGE representative met Mr. Michael Infurna of the SJCEHD at the site for
approval of the requested sampling locations (Figure 2). Following SJCEHD approval, nine soil
samples (LL-1 through LL-3, 1313-4, LL-5 through LL-8, ST-9) were collected at the specified
locations; sample ST-9 was angled at approximately 25 degrees to reach the area directly below the
septic tank.
Sample ST-9 was collected at a depth of 13 to 15 feet below surface grade (bsg); samples LL-1
through LL-3, LL-5 through LL-8 and DB-4 were collected at 4 to 6 feet bsg. Soil samples were
collected using a Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with four pre-cleaned 1.125-inch by
6-inch brass sleeves. Two sleeves of each soil sample were preserved by covering both ends of the
brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, capping, and sealing with tape.
All samples were properly labeled,placed in an appropriate,chilled container and transported under
chain-of-custody to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratory,a State of California Department of Health
Services (DHS)-certified laboratory. The samples were analyzed for:
• Carbon Chain Full Scan(C-6 through C-40) in accordance with EPA Method 8015M;
• Total oil and grease and total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPH) in accordance
with EPA Method 418.1;
• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), reporting all peaks in accordance with EPA Method
826013; and
• pH in accordance with EPA Method 150.1.
FIELD OBSERVATIONS
The soil samples collected from D13-4 and LL-7 had a detectable,unidentified odor;the odor did not
resemble petroleum-based contaminants,but did resemble the contents previously inside the septic
tank before the contents were pumped out on 03 June 2003. The presence of the odor and it's non-
petroleum nature-was confirmed by a Cal Tech representative.
LABORATORY RESULTS
None of the target analytes were reported at concentrations above the detection limits. Soil sample
pH measurements ranged from 6.94 to 8.93.Copies ofthe laboratory report with QA/QC data(CTEL
Project No: CT214-0308083) and chain-of-custody form are included in Appendix A.
