CHRONOLOGY
CITY OF ESCALON
E-Z GAS MINI-MARKET
1405 MAIN STREET
ESCALON CA 95320
10/19/90 A "No Further Action letter was issued for this site on this date, following
an investigation of contamination under a diesel tank removed in the late
1980's. (site address at that investigation was 1405 McHenry Ave.)
1996-1998 Three soil borings were drilled on this site in June 1996 as part of an
environmental subsurface investigation prior to using this parcel to
straighten and widen Hwy 120. Soil samples were collected as deep as 25
feet below surface grade (bsg). The only contaminant found was TPH as
lube oil it 2 feet bsg. In February 1997 a hand auger boring to 18.5 feet
bsg was completed and low levels of petroleum contamination was
detected. MTBE testing using EPA Method 8020 was non detect. In
March 1997 three soil borings to 50 feet bsg were drilled near the existing
UST's. No contamination was found in any of the soil samples tested.
MTBE was tested for using EPA Method 8020 and was non detect. The
City of Escalon bought the property in February 1998. Operation of the
UST's stopped in January 1998 according to the City of Escalon staff. The
City of Escalon submitted a UST closure permit application in March 1998
to EHD. The portion of the site where the UST's were located is now
beneath Hwy 120 (GIS photos attached).
07/23/98 Three underground storage tanks were removed this date under permit and
inspection by the Environmental Health Department (EHD). Tank#2-6,000
gal. diesel, tank#3-5,000 gal. gasoline and tank#4-500 gal. waste oil.
Odor and discoloration was noted under tank#2 by EHD staff. No odor or
discoloration was noted under tank#3 or tank#4 by EHD staff.
07/24/98 One underground storage tank was removed this date under EHD permit
and inspection, tank#1-10,000 gal. gasoline. Odor noted by EHD staff.
08/04/98 Analytical results of the soil samples collected from beneath the UST's at
the time of removal reported diesel contamination of 9,100 ppm at 12 feet
bsg under tank#2, and MtBE contamination of 4.4 ppm using EPA Method
- 8260 at 11 feet bsg under tank#1. Analytical results were ND for all
samples collected under tank#3 and tank#4.
08/14/98 Date of Unauthorized Release Report#98-U35 and Prop 65#98-127.
08/21/98 Re-sampling of tank pit areas occurred this date. A sample collected from
tank pit#1 at 14 feet bsg reported .33 ppm MtBE using EPA Method 8020.
Because of problems with the backhoe, a depth of only 12 feet bsg could
be reached in the diesel pit. Soil analytical results reported 540 ppm
TPHd.
