Upon filling, the coring tool is pulled from the hole and the cylinder is
removed. The cylinder is then cut and the selected interval is capped with Teflon foil and
end caps and placed on ice for shipment to the laboratory. The remainder is used for
geologic logging.
A total of two samples from the borehole will be submitted to the laboratory for analysis.
Groundwater Grab Sampling
Upon reaching the capillary fringe a hydropunch type sampling tool will be advanced into the
groundwater and a groundwater sample will be collected from each borehole. The samples
are collected from a mini stainless steel bailer and gently transferred into VOA vials. The
VOA vial is capped, inverted, tapped, and checked for head space bubbles. The vial will be
labeled and placed on ice for shipment to the laboratory. Clean surgical gloves are worn at
all times in handling of the sample and sampling equipment. The bailer is cleaned between
uses with an Alconox solution and a steam cleaner.
2.2 Soil Laboratory Analyses
Two soil samples will be submitted to Sherwood Laboratories of Hilmar (State Certified
Laboratory #1400) for analysis for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) by
EPA method 8020, gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-G) by EPA method
5030/8015(m) and Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) by EPA method PW. The detection
limits for these compounds are listed below. A Chain of Custody will be completed for all
samples collected and tracked to ensure sample integrity.
82(0 z) 5 t Pb Z
etectionLimits: BTEX MTBE TPH-6
of µg g
2.3 Groundwater Sample Analyses
One groundwater sample from each borehole will be submitted to Sherwood Laboratories of
Hilmar (State Certified Laboratory #1400) and analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene
and xylene (BTEX) by EPA method 602, Gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-Gas)
by EPA method 5030/8015(m) and Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) by EPA method
602.The detection limits for these compounds are listed below. The information gathered during this
phase of work will be presented in a report which will include a summary of the geology as
well as the results of sample analyses. The project will be supervised by Dr. Ray Kablanow,
a registered professional geologist. Copies of the report will be forwarded to both the
appropriate County and State regulatory agencies (SC PHS/EHD and CRWQCB).
