Page I of 1
Elena K. Manzo [EH]
From: Joanne Smith-Ripp Usmithripp@sjgov.org]
Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2013 4:43 PM
To: Kasey Foley [EH]
Cc: Elena K. Manzo [EH]
Subject: RE: Smoke Alarms
Hi Kasey,
I checked with PSC and obtained clarification on our HHW policy. The HHW is not permitted to accept any radioactive
materials including smoke detectors that are radioactive. Non -radioactive smoke detectors are accepted and are
processed as E/U-Waste (circuit board/batteries). From time to time, however, we do inadvertently receive the
radioactive type (such as at the bottom of a box at one of our HHW events) and when this happens, they are shipped off
to a company called Curie Environmental Services for proper disposal.
Customers utilizing our facilities and events that deliver these items are told that we cannot accept anything radioactive.
These customers are provided with a handout listing product manufacturers where they can ship the unit to for proper
disposal as well as contact information for a vendor that specializes in managing these devices properly.
Thank you,
Joanne
From: Kasey Foley [EH] fmailto:KFoley(a)sicehd.coml
Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2013 11:21 AM
To: Joanne Smith-Ripp; Elena K.
