(BBL).
i
Issues of Concern:
Sampling of Stockpile After Re-excavation of Former Tank Location: j
In accordance with the approved work plan' BBL directed the removal of soil from the former tank
location. The soil was monitored.with an organic vapor monitor(OVM)to screen for contaminated soil.
If soil with elevated OVM readings was encountered it was to be stockpiled onsite. OVM monitoring
consisted of collecting a sample of soil from each 3 to 5 cubic yards removed, putting the soil into a
covered glass mason jar, and inserting the probe of the OVM into the jar for measurement. During the
entire re-excavation there were no samples that produced any positive readings on the OVM. None of the
samples caused the OVM to indicate that an organic vapor was present in the soil. Olfactory senses and
visual observations of the soil also did not indicate that the soil contained any petroleum hydrocarbons.
During the excavation, clean soil was stockpiled next to the open hole. At a depth that was most likely to
contain contaminated soil (as indicated by previous soil sample results), samples were collected to
determine the presence'and concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons. This operation followed the
procedures as outlined in the approved work plan. There were no positive OVM readings in the bottom
' BBLtter to San Joaqquin County Environmental Health Division.August 4, 1996.
7599 Redwoo culevard •Sn 209• o ato,CA 94945-7701 •Tel(415)898-72 8 • Fax(415)898-7212 • Offices Nationwide
