SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Samples were collected from the borings at discreet 5-foot intervals using a 1.25-inch Geoprobe soil
sampling assembly loaded with four six-inchbrass sleeves. For each soil sample collected, both ends
of the second or other selected sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped, and sealed with tape.
Samples were labeled, stored on ice and transported under chain-of-custody to Cal Tech
Environmental Laboratories (CTEL) a State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH)-
certified analytical laboratory. Selected samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline(TPH-g)and as diesel(TPH-d)in accordance with
EPA Method 8015 Modified; and
• Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and total xylenes(BTEX)and the fuel additives methyl-tert-
butyl ether (MTBE), tertiary butyl alcohol(TBA), di-isopropyl ether(RIPE), ethyl tertiary
butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME),1,2-dibromoethane (EDB) and
1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA)in accordance with EPA Method 8260B.
Additionally, soils were screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic
vapor analyzer(OVA)equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID)calibrated to an appropriate
isobutylene standard. All sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed twice
with water prior to each sampling run. All rinseate generated by drilling-related activities was
containerized in properly labeled department of transportation (DOT)-approved 55-gallon drums,
and was stored on-site in an area lacking public access. All soil borings were backfilled over their
entire depth with either a Portland cement grout mix or a Portland cementibentonite slurry.
2.3. SOIL LOGGING
After sample preservation, soil was extruded from the remaining sleeves. Soils were visually
classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System(USCS).
Soil boring logs exhibiting soil profiles are depicted in Appendix C.
2.4. GRAB GROUND WATER COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
After collecting three observed saturated samples, the ground water table was measured and
observed to be between approximately 17 to 22 feet bsg. Two `grab' ground water samples were
collected from the borings; the first at the water table (labeled as GWI) and the second from the
maximum depth of each boring at approximately 55 to 60 feet bsg (labeled as GWII). B2 was an
exception with just one `grab' ground water sample collected from the GWII interval.Ground water
Advanced GeoEnvironcnental,Inc.
