The Ability of Bacteria to Come Into Contact with the Petroleum: Petroleum may be sorbed onto the soil particles and bound in macroscopic clumps which decrease both its' surface area exposed to the bacteria and its' movement through the soil pores. FyreZyme provides biodegradable surfactants and bioemulsifiers to decrease the adsorption of petroleum onto soil particles and allow it to move more freely through soil pores. The bioemulsifier simultaneously breaks do-,vn the macroscopic clumps into micro-micelles which increases the surface area and allows for greater bacterial activity on the petroleum. Soil Moisture Level Ideal moisture levels are usually provided at 60% to 80% of field holding capacity, or approximately 20140 by volume. This can be readily monitored by potentiometry. If the moisture level is at or near saturation, FyreZyme is applied in a more concentrated form, and 02 is supplied through air injection, air or water extraction wells, or a combination of technologies. Constant movement or replenishment of water and/or air is necessary to prevent anaerobic conditions and provide water for metabolism and hydrolysis. The biomass developed from the metabolism of petroleum can be more readily removed from the scene of high activity by continued water application. Temperature and pH of soil environment: Biologic activity by bacteria proceed at a wide range of temperatures; ideal conditions are present in soil whose temperature is within a range of 20-30 degrees Celsius. Only rarely is it necessary to heat or cool the soil, however, as bacterial metabolic activity will continue at a wide range of temperatures, albeit not at the optimum speed. FyreZyme pH can be altered as necessary to modify abnormal soil conditions. Differing soil types: A consideration of soil porosity, rate of transport of contaminant, air, and water, saturation, depth and type of aquifer, etc. are all important. One must consider soil type, redox potential, temperature, sorption coefficient, and other,well-documented soil variables affecting bioremediation. . SUMMARY: A careful study of each specific site is necessary to develop an action plan for bioremediation.
