 rr
SIERRA
Modesto Dry Ice, located at 260 South Main Street, is approximately 3/4 mile north of the
proposed Chevron site. In 1988 a 2,000-gallon underground fuel tank was removed and
hydrocarbon-bearing soil was discovered approximately 10 feet below grade in the tank
excavation. Hydrocarbon-bearing soil was used to backfill the excavation. A San Joaquin County
Public Health Service's letter to Modesto Dry Ice, dated April 11, 1991, states that a groundwater
investigation must be implemented at the site.4 No further information was available for this site.
According to City of Manteca and San Joaquin County Health Department personnel there
are no polluted wells within one-half mile of the site.'.'
No other potential sources identified in the area reconnaissance were mentioned in the
literature.
1.3 Topographic and Geologic Setting
The proposed Chevron site is located in San Joaquin County in the town of Manteca. The
topography of the site is relatively flat. The nearest surface water is the San Joaquin River,
located approximately 4.5 miles east of the site. The San Joaquin River flows north and west to
the Suisun Bay.
The site is located in the Great Valley geomorphic province, a nearly flat alluvial plain.
The soil encountered in the boring drilled for this investigation consisted of clean, well
graded and poorly graded sand with lenses of silty sand and sandy silt. This material is mapped
as unconsolidated to semi-consolidated Quaternary alluvium, lake, playa and terrace deposits.'
San Joaquin County Public Health Agency, 1991, Letter from Laurie Cotulla, REHS Program Manager, San
Joaquin County Health Department, to Jack C.Dozier,Inc., Professional Law Corporation, for Claudio Dell'eva,
Modesto Ice owner,April 11, 1991.
5 Von, Homer, telephone conversation between Homer Von, San Joaquin County Department of Health Services
and Eric Gross, SES Environmental Scientist, August 16, 1991.
6 Hulsey, 1991, telephone conversation between Joe Hulsey, City of Manteca Engineering Department and Eric
Gross, SES Environmental Scientist, August 16, 1991.
California Division of Mines and Geology, 1977,Geologic Map of California, 1:750,000,Compiled by C.W.
Jennings.
Page 4
