SOP #12
Date:9/l/93
The HydroPunch will be used if:
• The sample can be collected from 5 feet or more below the
top of the water table; and
• L2 liters of sample volume will be adequate.
The sample is collected and transported to the surface within the body of the tool.
As the tool is pulled upward, increased hydrostatic head closes lower and upper
check valves that retain the sample within the body of the tool. At the surface, the
HydroPunch is inverted, and the ground water sample is decanted through a top
discharge valve and tubing.
The sample containers, preservatives, and holding times required for specific
ground water parameters are specified in Section 6.0. Upon commencement of
sampling, the VOA vials will be completely filled first. Each filled, capped vial will
be inverted to ensure no air bubbles are present. If an air bubble is present, the vial
will be opened and topped off with additional sample. The vial will be immediately
capped and checked again for bubbles. If air bubbles are still present, the VOA vial
will be discarded and a new vial used. The VOA vial filling procedure is repeated
until no air bubbles are present.
After the VOA vial is filled, the other sample containers will be filled. Samples
collected for metals and general minerals analysis will be filled to the base of the
bottle neck. Care will be taken not to aerate the sample during transfer from the
bailer to the sample bottles and not to overfill bottles containing preservatives. All
water samples will be kept in a cooler with ice or frozen ice packs from the time they
are collected until they are extracted or analyzed. The turbidity of samples will be
recorded in the field notebook and/or on data collection forms to allow a qualitative
evaluation of results.
5.2.4 Sample Filtration
The following procedure will be followed for field filtration of HydroPunch
samples. Powderless, surgical gloves shall be worn during this procedure.
