March 9, 1987 Carnation Company/Can Division CG Project #TK-13 Page: 2
possible soil contamination at the site, three initial soil borings should be
excavated close to the tank pit apd'3)monitorin wells constructed on the site.
Phase 1 of the proposed investigation prograra consists of installing the
borings, located as shown on the Site Plan. These borings will be used: 1)
to detect hydrocarbons in soil adjacent to the tank, if present, 2) to evaluate
the directional bias of soil contamination for further investigation if required.
Phase 2 of the program will depend on whether product is present and will
consist primarily of completion of other borings in order to determine more
accurately the horizontal and vertical extent of soil contamination
The following Phase 1 work elements will be implemented at the Stockton
site:
1. The installation of three soil borings adjacent to the tank excavation
pit, located as shown on the Site Plan.
2. Description of subsurface conditions at the site as revealed in the
borings.
3. Collection and classification of relatively undisturbed soil samples
taken at five feet beneath the surface and at five feet intervals
thereafter, within the unsaturated zone, both for laboratory analyses
and sieve analyses.
4. Collection of initial water samples for testing if groundwater is
encountered before uncontaminated soil is reached.
5. Laboratory analysis for total hydrocarbons and EPA Method 8010-8020
will be completed on soil samples as needed, and tests will be
completed on all water samples using EPA Method 601 & 602.
6. Sieve analyses of geologic samples to determine shear angles of under-
lying sediments prior to excavation.
7. Construction of monitoring well completed 15 feet below the water
table or 5 feet into a massive clay layer.
8. Preparation of a report, signed by our State-Registered personnel,
summarizing our findings, conclusions and recommendations.
9. Proposal of Phase 2 course of action.
SOIL BORING/SAMPLES
Soil borings will be excavated using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped
with six-to-ten inch continuous flight, hollow stem augers or a Vibra-core
vibrational drill. All augers will be steam-cleaned prior to use to minimize
the possibility of cross-contamination. Bore holes will be logged as drilled,
