51 underground electrical power lines within or in close proximity to excavations <br /> when excavation or backfilling work is in progress <br /> Fill ■ Except by authorization of the Project Safety Officer and only when necessitated <br /> by conditions of the work or contract, all gas lines within or in close proximity to <br /> �t excavations shall be shut off before excavation commences and not opened to gas <br /> flow until backfilling is complete <br /> ■ Wherever possible, all water mains or other underground utility piping carrying <br /> fluids that pass through or in close proximity to excavations shall be shut off for <br /> the duration of the excavation and backfilling work <br /> {I a All valves and switches that are either closed or opened for the purpose of <br /> complying with the above requirements shall be labeled with a notice stating that <br /> �!1 they shall not be operated without the authorization of the Project Safety Officer <br /> 10 5 3 Barricades <br /> SIJ ■ All excavations shall be completely barricaded on all sides Barricades shall be <br /> P1positioned a minimum of two feet from the edges of the excavation <br /> ((ff <br /> ■ Excavation barricades shall consist of wooden or metal barricades spaced no <br /> l� 4 further apart than 20 feet Such barricades shall be not less than 36 inches high <br /> when erected <br /> ■ Barricades used around excavations that remain open during hours of darkness <br /> shall be equipped with yellow flashing lights 8-inches in diameter <br /> fill M <br /> Barricades shall be positioned as follows <br /> - A minimum of two barricades shall be used at the corners of an excavation, <br /> one along either side of the opening <br /> i <br /> - At least one barricade shall be used where vehicular traffic approach <br /> 1� excavations at right angles <br /> Where excavations parallel roadways, distance between barricades shall not <br /> exceed 40 feet unless this requirement conflicts with the above stated <br /> requirements and additional units are required <br /> - All lighted barricade units shall be checked at regular intervals and serviced <br /> as necessary to ensure that the lights are working <br /> ° ■ The space between barricades shall be spanned by at least 1 and 1/2-inch wide <br /> plastic, yellow and black striped tape The tape shall be stretched securely <br /> between barricades <br /> 10-11 REV 4/92-EGI <br /> ��� <br /> III re <br />
