' LEVINEā¢FRICKE
' Fuel Hydrocarbon Sampling
' Samples of the floating fuel hydrocarbons were obtained from
locations SP-2 , SP-3 and SP-4. In addition, one sample of diesel
fuel, unleaded regular gasoline, regular gasoline, unleaded pre-
mium gasoline and JP-4 was also collected for use as standards.
These fuel standards were obtained directly from the SPPL pipe-
lines at the Stockton terminal. Fuel samples were obtained at
four different times over a one week period from February 26 to
' March 4, 1988.
Samples were retained in variety of clean glass containers
' including 40-m1 vials, 500-m1 glass jars and 1-liter glass
bottles. After the samples were collected, they were kept cool
until their delivery to the respective analytical laboratory.
Sample shipment was performed under strict chain-of-custody pro-
tocols.
LABORATORY ANALYSES
Hydrocarbons collected from locations SP-2 (also called Northwest
or NW-1.) , SP-3 (also called Centerline or CL-1) and SP-4 (also
called Southeast or SE-1) were analyzed for chemical composition,
fuel composition, fingerprint characterization of fuel, and rela-
tive age/residence of product in the sampling location.
' Four independent analytical laboratories were used to analyze the
samples. One set of samples was sent to: Canonie Environmental
' Services Corporation, Stockton, California (CESC) ; Brown and
Caldwell Laboratories, Emeryville, California (BCL) ; and Farr,
Friedman & Bruya, Inc. , Seattle, Washington (FFB) . In addition,
one set of samples was sent to Enseco - California Analytical
Laboratory, West Sacramento, California (CAL) for analysis for
tetraethyl lead.
' Analysis for the chemical composition of product samples was con-
ducted using modified EPA Method 8270 with a Mass Spectrophotome-
ter detector. Samples collected at SP-2 , SP-3 and SP-4, as well
' as diesel, gasoline and JP-4 standards were analyzed using modi-
fied EPA Method 8015 by Gas Chromatography/Flame Ion Detector
(GC/FID) . Organic lead analysis was performed by EPA Method
7421. Laboratory reports and chromatograms may be found in
Appendix A.
Fingerprint characterization of the product samples and fuel
standards were analyzed using capillary column and GC/FID by CESC
and FFB. The chromatograms were prepared by both laboratories
for product samples and standards, and the chromatogram charac-
teristics were also reported by CESC.
1
' -3-
