SP/M-1 and SP/M-9 are categorized as manifold area wells.
SP/M-3, SP/M-4, SP/M-7, and SP/M-10 are designated as co-mingled area wells. SP/M-5,
SP/M-6 and SP/M-8 are categorized as low-concentration distal wells.
Groundwater bearing units at the Site are divided into a shallow and a deep zone. Deep zone
monitoring is performed through monitoring wells SP/M-7 and SP/M-8. In the Annual Report,
KMEP compared shallow zone groundwater elevations to deep zone elevations which
occurred at about four feet below sea level (-4 feet msl). During 2008, shallow groundwater
flowed to the northeast at about 0.001 feet per foot (ft/ft). This direction and gradient are
consistent with historical observations.
The Central Valley Water Board Executive Officer's 25 March 2005 letter conditionally
approved KMEP's 17 February 2005 Groundwater Cleanup Plan, which identified MNA as the
remedy. The condition specified that KMEP provide written acknowledgement of the remedial
action objective (RAO) "to remove all pollutants from soil and groundwater that originate from
the Site..." KMEP provided this written acknowledgement in a 15 April 2005 letter. The March
2005 letter further required that each Annual Report include a discussion of the amount of
time for groundwater concentrations to reach non-detectable levels.
The Annual Report provides a Mann-Kendall statistical analysis (Mann-Kendall) for MTBE that
updates a monitored natural attenuation (MNA) analysis provided in the 28 March 2008
Estimated Times For Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Fuel Oxygenates to Achieve Water Quality
California Environmental Protection Agency
a Recycled Paper
