T r
06 October 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0264
with a dark liquid which emitted an intense hydrocarbon odor.
The ensuing work was performed to assess and evaluate potential hydrocarbon-impact on soil in
these areas.
2.3. REGIONAL GROUND WATER ELEVATION
The estimated depth to ground water at this property is approximately 20 feet below surface grade
(bsg),based on information from Lines of Equal Depth of Water Wells, Fall 1993 published by the
San Joaquin County Flood Control District and Water Conservation District. The PHS-EHD uses
the depth to ground water to calculate the potential impact to ground water from both surface and
subsurface releases of hazardous substances.
3.0. PROCEDURES
3.1. SURFACE SOIL SAMPLING
On 18 August 1997 six shallow soil samples were collected from the storm water retention pond on
the eastern edge of the site. The samples were collected to determine if hydrocarbons from the
surface water runoff had impacted the unlined storm water retention pond.
Soil samples were collected from a depth of two feet bsg using a metric soil sampling hanlmer,pre-
loaded with clean, three-inch by two-inch brass sleeves. The sleeves collected were covered with
Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. All samples were labeled. Collected samples preserved
for laboratory analysis were placed in a chilled container, under ice, and transported to McCampbell
Analytical,Inc.,(MAI)under chain-of-custody. The sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox
solution and rinsed with water prior to each sampling run to prevent cross-contamination.
3.2. PROBING AND SAMPLING
Also on 18 August 1997, eight soil probe borings (131 through B8)were advanced at the site. Probe
borings 131 through B6 were advanced to determine whether an unauthorized release of
hydrocarbons from the three-stage clarifier had impacted the soil at the site. Probe borings B7 and
B8 were advanced to assess soil near the evaporative pond. The soil was sampled outside the
evaporative pond to avoid further damaging its plastic liner.
Probe borings 1,2, 3,4, 7 and 8 were advanced to a depth of 10 feet bsg. Probe borings 5 and 6 were
