I <br /> File No 20-3941-01 E01 KLEINFELDER <br /> April 2, 1997 <br /> 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY <br /> ' This is a report of Kleinfelder's Limited Soil Assessment conducted on a portion of the Highway <br /> 120 / McHenry Avenue Improvement Project in Escalon, California Specifically, the areas <br /> ' detailed in this investigation were the ARCO Gas Mui Mart at 1305 Escalon Avenue (APN 225- <br /> 100-03) and the EZ-Gas Mini Mart at 1405 Escalon Avenue (APN 227-062-04) in Escalon, <br /> California Messrs Thom Clark and Doug Stidham of the City of Escalon retained Kleinfelder to <br /> ' conduct the assessment in accordance with our proposals dated March 6, 1997 <br /> Kleinfelder obtained approval of our workplan from Messrs Dale Steele and Sayed All of <br /> Caltrans, and for permitting for drilling and soil sampling from Mr Steve Sasson of the San <br /> Joaquin County Public Health Services Department Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) <br /> ' As a part of the field assessment, a total of four soil bonngs were advanced to a maximum depth <br /> of 50 feet below surface grade (bsg) near the underground storage tanks (USTs) on both <br /> properties Kleinfelder collected a total of 43 soil samples for logging purposes, field screening <br /> and potential chemical analysis from the borings The borings were advanced using 6-inch outside <br /> diameter hollow stem auger Chemical analysis was subsequently conducted on 20 of the soil <br /> samples None of the hydrocarbon analytes were detected in any of the soil samples analyzed <br /> Low concentrations of total lead were detected in some of the soil samples analyzed The lead <br /> concentrations present appear to be indicative of naturally occurring background concentrations <br /> ' The City of Escalon must realize that the only method of detecting if contamination exists on site <br /> as a results of either station's activities will be observation and sampling dunng site demolition <br /> and dunng the removal of the tanks and plumbing (or in the case of the ARCO station, during the <br /> limited demolition) Removal of the underground storage tank system, any piping and dispensers <br /> will require permitting through PHS/EHD Additionally, a qualified hazardous materials <br /> contractor will be necessary for the excavation, removal, transportation, etc Soil sampling by a <br /> firm such as Kleinfelder will be required under the permit. <br /> Based on the results of the samples obtained during this investigation, Kleinfelder would <br /> recommend no further investigation or clean-up as it relates to the known to it at both sites <br /> For additional details of the investigation conducted please refer to the conclusions and <br /> recommendations in Section 6 of this report This report is subject to the limitations expressed in <br /> Section 7 <br /> 20-3941-01 E01/2017R005 Page 1 of 11 41997 Kleinfelder, Inc <br />
