r
File No 20-3941-01 E01 n KLEINFELDER
April 2, 199 7
r
3 BACKGROUND
r
The area of the intersection of California State Highway 120 and McHenry Avenue is scheduled
for an improvement project which involves the rerouting, widening, and realignment of Highway
120,and other miscellaneous improvements to both roadways
r
' 3.1 EZ-Gas Mimi-Mart
Kleinfelder has conducted a limited environmental subsurface investigation for the Highway
120/McHenry Avenue improvement project (Kleinfelder File No 20-3941-01 E01 report dated
August 20, 1996) During that project, elevated portable photoionization detector readings
were discovered in our bonngs on the EZ Gas Mini-Mart site
rOn February 13, 1997, a Kleinfelder field geologist advanced a single boring an angle at to a
depth of 18-1/2 feet by means of a hand auger The boring was advanced to a depth beneath the
"center tank" on site During the advancement of that boring (Boring AB-1) soil samples were
collected from depths of 5, 10, 14, and 18-112 feet below ground surface The samples obtained
r from depths of 14 and 18-112 feet were submitted for chemical analysis Total Purgeable
Petroleum Hydrocarbons were detected in both samples However, the concentrations attenuated
from 180 mg/kg to 3 4 mg/kg between the 2 sample depths The results of that limited sampling
' were detailed in Kleinfelder's revised proposal for the EZ-Gas site (File No 20-3941-01 E01
report dated March 6, 1997) Because of the concentrations present in the samples, Caltrans
District 10 requested that additional sampling be conducted That scope of work was detailed in
rthe revised proposal discussed above The results of that investigation are detailed in this report
r3.2 ARCO Mini-Mart
r Kleinfelder has conducted a limited environmental subsurface investigation for the Highway
120/McHenry Avenue improvement project (Kleinfelder File No 20-3941-01 E01 report dated
August 20, 1996) During that investigation, Boring B-1 was advanced at the ARCO Station at
' 1305 Escalon Avenue The soil sample from a depth of 2 feet contained low levels of"lubricating
oil" which may be representative of asphalt or asphalt leachate in the soil sample No detectable
hydrocarbons were present in the sample obtained from 5 feet Kleinfelder recommended no
further investigation or clean-up as a result of the hydrocarbons encountered in Boring B-1
20-3941-01 E0112017RO05 Page 4 of 1] 01997, Kleinfelder Inc
I
