Levine-Fricke-Recon
DRAFT
As described in Section 2.1, wells were identified by reviewing publicly available
documents. Of these documents, it is likely that the most reliable sources of data
indicating the location of an existing or abandoned well are well installation permits,
well destruction permits, and pump repair permits. Sanitation permits are less reliable
sources of data because the well location is either inferred from the accompanying field
sketch or the permit references a "private" water supply. With the exception of wells
LVMD #1, LVMD #2, LVMD #4, and LVMD #5, and the monitoring wells installed
at Lincoln Center and at the Chevron and Exxon service stations, the well locations
identified in this inventory have not been verified in the field.
3.1.1 Domestic Wells
i
i
A total of 339 domestic wells have been identified in the Study Area based on review
of DWR and SJC PHS/EHD records (Table 1; Figure 3). Nine additional wells were
identified based on review of the well surveys conducted by LH (1988), WEGE
(1989), and KJC (Farr 1992), as indicated in Table 1. The available data indicate that
47 of the 348 wells identified have been abandoned.
In general, domestic wells are found in two locations in the Study Area, one area north
of Lincoln Road in the neighborhood west of Pacific Avenue; and one area south of
Douglas Road in the vicinity of Porter Avenue. The direction of groundwater flow in
the A-zone aquifer observed at Lincoln Center is generally to the east. To date,
Hazardous Substances, excluding vinyl chloride, have been detected in groundwater
samples collected from Lincoln Center and immediately north of Lincoln Center. The
two general areas where domestic wells are located are likely outside the area where
Hazardous Substances have been detected in groundwater or are expected to migrate.
Three domestic wells identified in the well inventory are located downgradient from
Lincoln Center (Figure 3) as described below:
3
A well potentially located at 6632 Pacific Avenue, across Pacific Avenue from
{ Lincoln Center, was identified on field sketches that accompanied a sanitation
j permit for installation of a septic field in 1958 and a sanitation permit in 1961. The
sanitation permits indicate that the property owner was Safeway Stores. According
to SJC Assessor's records, a Safeway store, formerly located at 6632 Pacific
Avenue, was occupied at one time by a Liquor Barn and is currently occupied by
Michael's Arts and Crafts. LFR contacted the store manager for Michael's Arts
and Crafts who was unaware of a well located at this property. LFR was unable to
i locate a well in the parking lot used by Michael's Arts and Crafts. LFR conducted
a title search of this property which indicated that Safeway owned the property in
1956, and later leased the property. The current property owner is First Jun Jun
s Investments, Inc. (LFR is trying to contact the current property owner to
inquire about this possible well.) A Water Well Drillers Report was obtained for
a well constructed for Safeway at this location, as described in Section 3.2.1. The
f well location is not specified on that report.
