Lincoln Center- Injection PilotOdy
Pagc 2 of 3
From: Spill, Chris [mailto:Chris.Spill@lfr.com]
Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2007 11:43 AM
To: Mike Infurna [EH]
Subject: Lincoln Center-Injection Pilot Study
Mike,
LFR is in the process of evaluating the need for a pilot study to inject a degradable carbohydrate solution
(such as molasses, cheese whey, or corn syrup) into the impacted saturated zones in the vicinity of the
Bank of Stockton. Conceptually, the pilot study would require the installation of multiple injection points
(spacing yet to be determined)along a line perpendicular to the chlorinated solvent plume. The injection
points would consist of 2-inch diameter, PVC blank casing and wire-wrapped well screens (screen
lengths yet to be determined). At present, we are anticipating 11 injection points per saturated zone
(Upper A, Lower A and B zones)for a total of 33 injection points.
The injection points, which are constructed similarly to monitoring wells (sand filter pack, bentonite seal,
and grout seal), will be abandoned at some point in the future ideally by pressure grouting. After
reviewing the "Standards for Well Construction & Destruction in San Joaquin County", the following
questions came to mind:
Is there a county requirement that limits the length of screen allowed if pressure grouting is to be
used for abandonment?
Is there a county requirement that would prohibit the installation of nested injection points of
variable depths within the same borehole?
Would county allow for injection points to be installed using a direct-push drilling method (which
would not allow for an annular seal of a minimum of 2 inches in radial thickness)?
The scope for this pilot test is still being developed and a work plan will eventually be provided to the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board for approval; currently, we are only attempting to
evaluate our options with respect to installation of the.injection points.
Thanks for your guidance.
Christopher G.
