filter media is located under the coolant stream. The used filter will be
treated as hazardous waste once it is entirely consumed. It is not
considered hazardous waste while it is still installed on the machine. It is
in use, much like the oil filter on your car. The filter lasts approximately 5-
7 years and cannot be changed in the middle of its life.
o Metal fines on the floor generated from Dry Blast in the back shop (Photo 9),
two blue pans of oily metal shavings (Photo 13,14) in the back shop, seven 55-
gallon drums of metal residuals outside the back shop (Photo 15,16), and metal
shavings from various milling machines and lathes at both shops (photo
10,11,12) require hazardous waste and size determination. Technician at the
back shop stated metal fines from sand blasting units at both the front and back
shop (Photo 8, 9) are being recycled as scrap metal (to Modesto Junk Co)
without first determining particle size or hazardous properties . Generator shall
make hazardous waste determination of the waste and manage the waste
accordingly.
* Immediately make a hazardous waste determination of the above wastes and
manage each accordingly, or dispose of the wastes as hazardous waste in
accordance to California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 22. Immediately stop
recycling metal fines and make a hazardous and size determination: Particles
100 microns or smaller must be handled as hazardous waste if the metal is
determined to be a hazardous waste. If a waste is declared non-hazardous,
please submit documents supporting such a determination to EHD. Submit a
statement and supporting documentation (i.e. hazardous waste disposal receipts)
explaining how the above wastes were managed by December 19, 2011.
Response: Metal fines generated from the dry blast will be treated as hazardous
waste. We have located a collection bucket, with proper labeling, near the dust
collection system for use when cleaning up the area.
Metal shavings from the blue pans, milling machines, and 7-55 gallon drums are
non hazardous large metal shavings and are all recyclable. They have been
placed in recycle containers to be picked up by scrap metal dealer.
122, 123, 124 125.
