3.2 PROCEDURE
This section describes the procedures for collection, labeling, handling,
tracking and field quality assurance for soil samples collected using
hollow-stem augers.
3.2.1 Soil Samples
Soil borings will be drilled using a truck-mounted hollow-stem auger.
Continuous soil samples will be collected from the surface of the until
groundwater is intercepted. Soil samples will be collected at intervals
two-and-one-half-feet deep, using an 18-inch long by 2-inch diameter
split-spoon sampler lined with three 6-inch stainless steel or brass
sample tubes. The split-spoon sampler will be driven ahead to the
hollow-stem auger to collect soil samples.
Soil borings will be drilled with hollow-stem augers and sampled at the
intervals specified in the workplans. Sampling shall be done in
advance of the lead auger to minimize potential cross-contamination.
Samples for laboratory analysis shall be taken with a California-modi-
fied sampler or continuous soil samplers with inner liners. If the Cali-
fornia-modified sampler is used, it shall be driven using a 140-pound
hammer with a 30-inch drop. Standard blow counts shall be recorded
for driving the sampler 6 and 12 inches (ASTM Method D 1586).
Upon retrieval of the sampler, the liners shall be removed from the
sampler and placed on a flat surface for evaluation. The top and bot-
tom of the core and sampled interval will be marked on the liners.
The ends of each liner containing soil to be submitted for analysis shall
be covered with Teflon film before being covered with plastic caps.
Each submitted sample will be labeled with the boring number, bottom
depth of liner, date and time of sampling, the individual performing
the sampling, and job number. Figure 1 is an example of a typical sam-
ple label. The labeled liners shall be placed in self-sealing plastic bags in
a cooler with ice or frozen ice packs for storage until they are delivered
to the analytical laboratory.
The remainder of the sample shall be classified using visual manual
methods (ASTM D-2488-84). The logged sample shall be discarded for
subsequent disposal.
A boring log will be completed for each borehole using a form similar
to the sample drilling log form shown in Figure 2. The field notebook
and/or data collection forms will contain the following information:
• Project name and number.
• Drilling company name.
3-2
