and cooler ID, and stored with the other samples until they are deli-
vered for analysis to the laboratory. Trip blanks are not opened in the
field. One trip blank set is sent per cooler of samples per day.
4.4.2 Field Blanks
Field blanks check for contamination of samples due to factors at the
well site. For a field blank, a volatile organic compound (VOC) vial set
is taken empty to the field and filled at the well site with organic-free,
deionized water at the time the well is sampled. Then this sample is
logged into the field notebook and labeled with a QC number for sub-
mittal to the lab. One field blank is submit-ted every day.
4.4.3 Field Duplicates
Sometimes referred to as a split or replicate, a field duplicate is a check
on field technique and lab consistency. Two samples from a single
bailer are filled at the same sampling location. One is labeled as the
actual hydraulic sample and the other is given a QC number. Preserva-
tion and shipping of samples and their duplicates is identical. One du-
plicate sample will be identified for laboratory analysis for every 10
samples collected. If less than 10 samples are collected, there will be
one duplicate sample one per sampling event.
4.4.4 Decontamination and Rinsate Samples
Water used to clean nondisposable sampling equipment will be sam-
pled in the field, as follows:
• Each fresh batch of Alconox Washing Solution will be sampled.
• Steam-cleaning feed water will be sampled prior to use (cold).
• Steam-cleaning water will be sampled from the steam-cleaner out-
put (hot).
• Deionized carbon-free water contained in the water sprayer will be
sampled.
• Deionized carbon-free water will be sampled as it flows off the
sampler during the final rinse.
4.4.5 Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicate for Soil Samples
Matrix spikes and matrix spike duplicates are prepared in the laboratory
to help determine long-term precision and accuracy of an analytical
method on various matrices.
