Department of Health Services (DOHS) certified hazardous waste
testing laboratory (Certificate #257) . All soil samples were
tested for TPH and total lead. The two soil samples from each
boring with the highest and lowest TPH concentrations were
tested for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using EPA method
I 8240, except for sample B-9 @ 30 ' which was tested only for
BTXE. Alternatively, if no TPH were detected in soil samples
collected from a given boring, then the two samples obtained
from that boring at 5 and 10 feet bgs were tested for VOCs.
Only the sample with the highest TPH concentration was tested
for total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPH) using EPA
Method 4181. The soil sample with the highest total lead
' concentration was tested for soluble lead. The laboratory was
also instructed to report the carbon chain breakdown for
hydrocarbons detected in soil samples B-7 @ 5 ' and B-9 @ 201 .
' Furthermore, one soil sample (B-9 @ 301 ) was delivered to B C
Analytical for the purpose of performing simulated distillation
and gas chromatography by EPA Methods 8015 and 8020 to attempt
to finger print the contaminants.
' The carbon chain analyses indicate concentrations of
different hydrocarbons with different chain lengths ranging from
C7 (light) through C24 (heavy) . This range does not necessarily
include all carbon chains which may be present in the samples,
but provides an indication of the predominant carbon chain
lengths present. The simulated distillation results provided
the same type of information as carbon chain analyses, except
that the lightest hydrocarbon is CS and the heaviest is C43 .
Gasoline contains hydrocarbon compounds, the majority of which
' range from C4 to C10 with a maximum near C5 . There are
compounds that fall outside this range; however, their
contribution to the total mass of material is small. Gasoline
has high levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes.
These compounds have high octane ratings. The remaining
compounds are generally straight chain and branched chain
' alkanes, most of which have low octane ratings. The results of
the testing are shown on Tables 1 through 3 , and the laboratory
reports are contained in Appendix C.
' 5. 2 QUALITY CONTROL SAMPLE
An equipment blank associated with soil sampling activities
was prepared by filling two 40-m1 VOA vials (labeled as MW-2)
with the distilled water used to rinse the sampling equipment
after it had been washed following the procedures described in
Section 2 . 3 . The equipment blank then was analytically tested
for TPH. No TPH were detected in the water sample (see Appendix
C) .
Project No. 1232 -6-
ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT,INC®
