Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
4.3.2 Data Needs
Representative samples will be collected, as needed, to adequately characterize the quality of
some of the process water streams. The following constituents may be analyzed to aid in
process water stream characterization:
• General minerals including total hardness, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium,
boron, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, total alkalinity, carbonate, bicarbonate, hydroxide,
sulfate, chloride and nitrate.
• Ammonia
• Total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN)
• Total dissolved solids (TDS)
• Total suspended solids (TSS)
• Volatile dissolved solids (VDS)
• Sulfide
• Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
_ • Organic acids (selected streams)
In addition to quality characterization, flow or volume of each stream will be estimated or
measured. Several streams are not operated continuously and therefore, flow values for each
stream will only be collected during operation of that stream. Table 10 outlines the months of
operation of the individual processes.
The following sections discuss the data needs for each process water stream. Table 11 lists the
specific constituents that may be analyzed and the methods used for each process water
stream.
4.3.2.1 Winery Process Area
A majority of the winery process area stream is generated during sanitation and clean-up
activities performed throughout the year. The water is rinsed into floor drains that are connected
to the sump. Since this stream is comprised of wash water from several locations, it is not
possible to collect a representative sample from one location. An estimate of the characteristics
of this stream will be made by evaluating characteristics of the sump while taking into
consideration characteristics of the other contributing streams.
Sampling of the sump for the process water characterization will be collected during the monthly
wastewater effluent monitoring. Of the constituents outlined in Table 11, only those that are not
.. currently analyzed during the monthly wastewater effluent monitoring will be analyzed as part of
this Process Water Characterization Work Plan.
