{` Site Health&Safety Plan
Cargill,Inc.,Port Road No.8
Fw Stockton,California
Sierra-Pacific Project No.95-128.02
• Brain hemorrhage;
• Heat stroke;
• Heat exhaustion;
• Hypoglycemia; `
• Gastroenteritis;
• Pneumonia or other severe respiratory infection; or
•
Asthma.,
The four main pesticide groups that could be present at the site include: organophosphorus and
organochlorine pesticides, phenoxy herbicides, and carbamates. Chlorinated-hydrocarbon
esticides are relatively persistent in the natural environment and are
p y p efficiently absorbed by
ingestion. The toxic mechanism associated with DDT, DDE, and other organochlorine
pesticides is not well.known. In general, these compounds stimulate or depress the central
nervous system. Toxic symptoms vary with the specific pesticide and may include nausea,
C
convulsions, coma, mental confusion, or headache, sweating, vomiting, irritation of eyes and
skin, palsy, dizziness, lethargy, weakness, and paralysis of hands, tongue, lips and face.
Symptoms have been reported as soon as 30 minutes after massive exposure but generally
develop more slowly.
w
Respiratory Hazards
Respiratory hazards that workers may encounter during the soil sampling project include
exposure to vapors, gasses, or dusts during material handling and decontamination. Sulfur
dioxide generation is possible, if fertilizer material has decomposed in surrounding sumps or
tanks. Precautions will be taken to minimize dust generation during work activities. During
project activities, ingestion is,unlikely. However, to prevent ingestion, workers should wash
C, their hands and faces prior to eating, drinking, smoking, or using rest room facilities.
L
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. 11
