June 30, 1995
Page 4
3. Piping at the site may not have been replaced.
Two generations of product piping have been used at the site. The
first generation of piping was associated with the original station
product facilities which were removed in 1986. Data available to date
regarding the piping are from the station remodeling bid specifications
and the current product piping and dispenser configurations.
The bid specification details the removal of the piping as a task to be
performed during station remodeling. The current product piping and
dispenser configurations cross the former piping. The installation of
the, current piping would require the removal of the former piping.
Three soil borings are proposed, to confirm that the former piping has
been removed and to evaluate the soil conditions beneath the former
piping. The location of these borings are shown on Figure 4 of the
CAP revision.
2.2 Primary Source
I. Piping may be a primary source; soil samples were not collected
beneath the piping. Soil contamination within the 1986 tank removal
does not correlate with groundwater contamination.
It has been presumed that the primary source of hydrocarbon impact at
the site is from the former product facilities and/or product piping.
However, soil data collected to date does not unequivocally suggest an
on-site source. Considering the proximity of the site to other potential
hydrocarbon sources, it seams likely that the primary source of
hydrocarbons detected beneath the site were generated from on-site
activities.
It should be noted, however, that the relatively small, low concentra-
tion dissolved hydrocarbon plume that underlies the site is situated
xvithin a larger higher concentration chlorinated plume. Further, the
chlorinated compounds overlap into the hydrocarbon range of
detection. Therefore, the reported hydrocarbon concentrations may
actually contain chlorinated contributions.
Based on extensive subsurface investigation that has been performed at
the site to date, the quantity of any release that occurred at the site
3:0 I3570CAPLET.DOC.doc
