NFA Sites • -2- • 29 October 1993
DDRW, Sharpe
The enclosed Table 1 presents the list of sites for which we have continuing concerns. The list is
divided into the three following categories:
CATEGORY I SITES
The sites in Category I, Table 1, are those that the Board believes are appropriate to consider for no
further action. Category I sites must be confirmed to be appropriate for no further action, using
historical aerial photographs to verify that there is no significant visual evidence of past disposal
practices. Placement of sites in Category I is based on limited information, including some
technical data and operational practices, using best professional judgement.
CATEGORY II SITES
The sites listed in Category II, Table 1, are those that the Board continues to have concerns because
these sites have been inadequately documented, there may be existing data which has not been
presented in a comprehensive fashion or not reported. Placement of sites in Category II is based on
concerns described in comments to the Draft Soils FS Report (June, 1993), Draft Soils FS Report
and Appendix A - Problem Assessment Report for Underground Storage Tanks (February, 1992),
and Work Plan Addendum (July, 1992).
It is DDRW, Sharpe's responsibility to assemble and present all existing information on individual
l Category II sites (see Table 1). Sites may be grouped together where location and operations are
(/ similar. All existing information should be reviewed and summarized such as historical aerial
photographs, technical data of soil, soil gas, and ground water sampling relevant to the site, to
assess if substances and activities at the site could threaten ground water. This information then
provides the basis for making a NFA decision, or for identifying the need for more work in order to
make any decision, NFA or remediation. At a minimum, the following written information must
presented for each site or group of sites:
1. Summary tables of existing data (soils boring samples, soil gas data, ground water data
up and down gradient of site, etc.)
2. Maps with locations of borings, wells, soil gas probes, direction of ground water flow,
etc.
3. Sample evaluation table (see attached example, IRP Data Summary, Mather AFB, July
1993).
4. Discussion of the analytical data, aerial photographs and any other qualitative
information.
As we further discuss the NFA documentation needs, other relevant information may have to be
included. In addition, there may be several Category II sites that may qualify for NFA status with
minor clarifications. This will be further discussed at the upcoming RPM meeting.
