Mr. Marshall Cloud
July 20, 2006
Page 2
Investigation Work Plan and should be referred to as catch basins in this
report for consistency.
3.) Page 2-3, section 2.3.0.1, fourth sentence; Please state the lithologic layer
containing the hardpan layer and expand the definition of locally used this
instance.
4.) Page 2-5, section 2.3.2.0.1; The section should note that the increase in
ground water elevations measured in 3Q05 compared to the previous year is
due to the higher than normal rainfall totals for 2005 in conjunction with
extensive surface water discharge at DDJC-Sharpe.
5.) Page 3-4, section 3.4.1.1, General Head Boundaries; According to section
3.4.1.2, the South San Joaquin Irrigation District Canal (SSJIDC) along the
eastern boundary of DDJC-Sharpe was simulated with the MODFLOW river
package but was not discussed under the General Head Boundaries section.
Since section 3.4.1.1 discusses the San Joaquin River and French Camp
Slough head boundaries, a discussion of the SSJIDC as a general head
boundary should made in section 3.4.1.1 prior to calculation discussions in
section 3.4.1.2.
6.) Page 3-5, section 3.4.1.4; To aid in the interpretation of hydraulic recharge
values it would be useful to conduct an independent verification of localized
recharge through the collection and analysis of chloride monitoring data in
ground water. Monitoring for the presence of chloride in ground water will
help identify or verify the various sources of ground water recharge at DDJC-
Sharpe.
7.) Page 3-6, section 3.4.1.8, first sentence; This section should mention DDJC-
Sharpe's off-site extraction well (EW) EWCC3. This off-site extraction well's
goal is to pump continuously to maintain hydraulic control of the existing
Central Area Trichloroethene ground water plume.
8.) Figure 3-4, Calibrated Net Recharge; The figure is unclear where the DDJC-
Sharpe site boundary is located amongst the various recharge boundaries. It
would be helpful to outline the DDJC-Sharpe site boundary in another color to
differentiate it from the various recharge cell boundaries.
