S
Mr. Maurice Benson
February 24, 2009
Page 2
3. Page ES-3, ES.3.1, OU1, first paragraph, last sentence; The report states that
preliminary resultsfrom the 2007/2008 CPT Hydropunch® investigation also
confirm that the plumes are being contained." This statement contradicts section
ES.2.1 stating the Hydropunch®data "...indicate a portion of the plume is
beyond the capture of existing on-depot extraction wells..." and section ES.3.1
stating "...even though contaminant capture is incomplete west of the depot
boundary." DTSC recommends that sections mentioning "plume containment" be
modified for accuracy and consistency to reflect the current state of conditions at
DDJC-Sharpe.
4. Five Year Review Summary, Page 2, Operable Unit 1, third paragraph; See
Comment #1.
5. Page 3-3, section 3.1.3, first sentence; The sentence states that groundwater at
DDJC-Sharpe is first encountered at approximately 8 feet below ground surface
(bgs). DTSC is unaware of groundwater at this shallow depth interval and
believes that the sentence was meant to state groundwater is first encountered at
18 feet bgs. Please modify the sentence accordingly.
6. Page 3-6, section 3.5.2, third paragraph; During previous site visits and
discussions with base personnel, it was acknowledged that the coyote has been
observed on the Depot property and would naturally be competing for
resources/prey such as the jackrabbit and field mouse. DTSC recommends the
coyote be added to the list of animals observed at DDJC-Sharpe.
7. Figure 4-5, Well Locations; The gray dashed line(s) presented in the figure are
not included or defined in the legend. The figure's legend should include a
description of the dashed line for clarity.
8. Page 5-2, section 5.2.1, Results of Actions, last sentence; See comment#1.
9. Figure 7-1, Tricholorethene (TCE) Comparison Map; DTSC notes that the
concentrations range for TCE presented in the figure does not account for the
higher concentrations found at monitoring well (MW) MW437C which peaked to
650 pg/L in March 2002 and 640 pg/L measured in July 2003. The 2003 figure
should include the "orange" colored boundary representing a concentration
above the 500 pg/L range. Additionally, the 2004 map should also have an
orange boundary representing the 520 pg/L detected during the July 2004 event.
