f. Containers of ignitable or reactive waste are stored 50 feet from
• property line.
Containers carrying ignitable or reactive waste are stored more than 50
feet from the property line to provide the proper buffer zone.
g. Incompatible wastes are not placed in the same container.
Care will be taken to ensure of chemical compatibility of wastes placed
in each container and prevent leakage or damage during movement. Overpacked
drums (DOT Spec 6D) are available for leaking or damaged containers.
The initial determination of compatibility begins with the accumulation
phase. Generator along with the HWF manager make the determination for
storage at accumulation point. Segregation of waste streams is strongly
emphasized at all generator sites. Homogenity of the material increases the
re-cycling option.
As waste material is delivered to storage facility (Building 605) , it is
placed in one of seven locations (see Figure VI •4) . Placement is based on
compatibility determination per U.S. EPA pulication, EPA 600/2-80-076, A
Method for Determining the Compatibility of Hazardous Waste.
Storage Bay I is reserved for water reactive materials. Material is not
stacked more than two high.
• Storage Bay II is reserved for non-water reactive acids, separating
organic and inorganics if found to be non-compatible.
Storage Bay IIIc and IIIb are reserved for halogenated hydrocarbons
(e.g. , solvents) and PCB contaminated hydrocarbons.
Storage Bay IV and VI are reserved for liquid contaminated with toxic
metals, and used oils.
Storage Bay Va and Vb are reserved for alcohols, amides, amines, non-
halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones, nitriles, and phenol compounds.
Storage Bay VII is reserved for odd size items (e.g. , PCB transformers) .
Building 530 is reserved for storage of abrasive blast sand and empty
containers. Storage of liquids is not permitted in Building 530.
h. Waste is not placed in an unwashed container that had previously held
an incompatible waste.
To prevent the potential damages caused by mixing of incompatible wastes,
SHAD personnel do not place any hazardous waste in unwashed containers.
VIII-17
•
