' RESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAM <br /> The level of respiratory protection needed at a site depends primarily on the type of hazardous <br /> substances to be encountered Respirator equipment will be selected in accordance with 29 CFR <br /> t1910 134 and 30 CFR Part II and should conform to the recommendations of National Institute of <br /> Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), EPA's <br /> ' "Standard Operating Safety Guides," and NIOSHIOSHAIU S Coast Guard (USCG)/EPA publication <br /> on "Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities " <br /> ' Regulations require a respiratory protection program that encompasses user responsibilities, training <br /> for proper use, and respirator maintenance Highlights of PRC's respiratory protection program are <br /> ' listed below <br /> ' • All respirator users must be certified for respirator use by a licensed physician within <br /> 12 months before using a respirator The physician's examination should adequately <br /> address the medical restrictions listed in ANSI Z88 6-1984, "Physical Qualifications <br /> ' for Respirator Use," and Appendix A-4 of ANSI Standard Z88 2-1980, "Practices for <br /> Respiratory Protection " <br /> • Facial hair is not permitted as it could interfere with the seal between the respirator <br /> facepiece and the user's face <br /> • Contact lenses are not permitted with any respirator use Appropriate respirator <br /> spectacles will be provided to all users whose vision is poorer than 20140 in one eye <br /> ' • Within 12 months before using a respirator, each user shall be fit tested with the <br /> specific make and model of respirator to be worn on the,lob The respirator fit test <br /> will employ both an odorous vapor, such as banana oil, and an irritant smoke The <br /> fit test procedure shall conform to Appendix A-5 of ANSI Standard Z88 2-1980, <br /> "Practices for Respiratory Protection " A new fit test is required when the respirator <br /> user has experienced any change in facial contour since the last fit test, when a <br /> ' different model respirator is to be worn, and when the positive pressure/negative <br /> pressure field fit test is unsatisfactory The PRC on site health and safety <br /> coordination OHSC maintains records of respirator fit tests, that include the <br /> ' employee's name, specific make and model of respirator tested, type of fit test <br /> (odorous vapor and irritant smoke), name of the test operator, date, and results <br /> ' • All respirators, components, connectors, and related equipment must be approved by <br /> NIOSH or the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) <br /> F - 1 <br />
