2.1.1 Hand Auger Soil Sampling
At each boring location, soil samples will be collected at depths of 2.5 and 5 feet bgs
using a hand auger sampler lined with a 6-inch acrylic liner. Following soil sample
collection, the liner will be removed from the hand-auger, the ends will be capped with
plastic end caps, and the capped liner will be placed in an iced cooler. In addition, a
portion of soil cuttings from just above each sample interval will be field screened with a
photo ionization detector(PID) for the presence of volatile organic compounds(VOCs).
Following field screenings, the acrylic liner from each sample will be uncapped and
representative samples for gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-g) and gasoline
range VOCs will be collected using a laboratory-supplied United States Environmental
Protection Agency (USEPA) Method SW5035 field extraction kit. The liner will be
recapped for submittal to the laboratory for diesel range petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH-d)
and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and, as required, total lead analysis.
2.1.2 Direct-push Soil Sampling
Following completion of hand-auger sample collection, each boring will be advanced
from 5 feet bgs to 10 feet bgs utilizing direct-push drilling techniques. In each boring,
soil samples will be collected continuously using acrylic liners installed within the
direct-push boring rods. Upon retrieval from the boring, the acrylic liners containing the
soil samples will be cut into approximately two foot sections, labeled with the depth
interval. A portion of each section will be immediately field-screened using a PID for the
presence of VOCs. The PID will be calibrated to 100 ppm isobutylene (volatile
hydrocarbons). PID results will be recorded in the site field logbook. Following field
screening, the ends of each section will be capped with plastic end caps and placed in an
iced cooler.
The soil samples from 0.5 to 1 foot above the soil/water interface (7.5 to 10 feet bgs)
from each direct-push boring will be submitted for laboratory analysis. Upon
determining the appropriate sample interval based on soil saturation, the acrylic liner
from 0.5 to 1 foot above the soil/water interface will be cut to approximately one foot in
length, and representative samples for gasoline TPH-g and gasoline range VOCs will be
collected using a laboratory-supplied USEPA Method SW5035 field extraction kit. The
liner will be recapped for submittal to the laboratory for TPH-d and PAHs.
2.2 Hollow-Stem Auger Boring/Well Installation
A California P.G. or a geologist working under the direct supervision of a California P.G.
will direct a licensed California well installer, to advance up to 16 hollow-stem auger soil
borings for the installation of monitoring wells (Figure 3). The wells will be installed
Sampling and Analysis Plan-Final 5/18/2012
2-2
