2 FIELD ACTIVITIES
During site characterization the following primary tasks are scheduled to be performed;
(1) hand auger/direct-push borings for the purposes of soil sample collection, (2)
monitoring well installation and development, and (3) collection of groundwater samples
from newly installed monitoring wells.
2.1 Hand Auger/Direct-Push Borings
Up to 45 hand auger/direct-push borings will be advanced on the property. Thirty (30)
borings will be located in and around the northern and western portions of the former
Time Oil terminal tank farm where documented unleaded gasoline spills occurred in 1981
and 1983, and the locations of the former ASTs and product piping. Fifteen (15)
additional borings will be advanced in the area of the inactive loading rack area and pump
manifold area. Approximate hand auger/direct-push boring locations are shown on
Figure 3). Soil samples from each boring will be collected at 2.5 and 5 feet bgs, and 0.5
to 1 feet above the soil/water interface (7.5 to 10 feet bgs) from each boring, and
submitted for laboratory analyses.
Soil samples will also be collected at 0.5 to 1 foot bgs from the twenty-five (25) borings
located in the tank farm area to assess lead in soils related to historical surface coating
maintenance of the former ASTs. A log of each hand auger/direct-push boring will be
prepared in the field by either a California Professional Geologist (P.G.) or a geologist
working under the direct supervision of a California P.G. Boring logs will include the
project name and location, drilling method, sampling method, soil sample depths, and
descriptions of the soils encountered. Subsurface lithology will be described consistent
with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D2488-84, Standard Practice
for Description and Identification of Soils (Visual-Manual Procedures). A copy of
ETG's standard boring log is presented in Appendix A.
During drilling activities, the hand auger will be decontaminated between each sample
and between borings. Direct-push boring rods and other downhole equipment will be
decontaminated between borings.
Sampling and Analysis Plan-Final 5/18/2012
2-1
